 Jubilee Homeowner Shares Her Love for Gardening

When asking Jubilee homeowner and master gardener, Paulette Nager, about her garden, one might be prudent to bring along an encyclopedia of plants for reference. The botanist’s passion and expertise in gardening is clear as she ticks off the names of the plants found in her garden, using their Latin names.
“I have a great many herbaceous perennials – Heliopsis [False Sunflower], Iris Sibirca [Siberian Iris], Narcissus [Daffodils]. Botanists use the plants’ Latin names because what we may commonly call a sunflower here is not what someone else would call a sunflower in another area or country. So by using the botanical names we know exactly what we are referring to.”
Paulette grows all of her plants from seeds and they spill over from the garden into her garage and home. “I have dozens of plants under fluorescent light – there are too many to plant in the yard. I often give them away as gifts to neighbors. Just the other evening I took some arugula to a dinner party held by a woman who enjoys cooking.”
Her neighbors also benefit from her knowledge, consulting with her on their own gardens or asking her to help them determine the name and care of a plant. “People often stop me when I’m out gardening or walking around the community if they’re puzzled about a particular plant or want to learn more about flowers. I enjoy helping them discover the joys of gardening.”
That social aspect is one of the reasons she and her husband, Markwell, chose Jubilee as their new neighborhood two years ago. “We just love it here. Prior to moving to Jubilee we lived in Enumclaw and bred thoroughbreds. As a result, we rarely went out. Now, we socialize all of the time. Plus, we’re just 40 minutes to Emerald Downs where many of the horses we raised race.”
Paulette’s enthusiasm for life, broad range of interests and generous spirit are evident while speaking with her. Like her neighbors at Jubilee, she seizes each day and makes the absolute most of it.
