Lacey and Olympia Applauded for Green Living!

Grandma & Grandkids

The cities of Lacey and Olympia have been attracting a lot of attention in the national press for their exceptional business climate and commitment to protecting the environment. Residents have been busy clipping our news articles about the great place we live in. Here’s brief sample of what other people are saying about us.

Safest, Most Secure
(Sperling’s Best Places, January 2008)
Olympia was cited as the “nation’s safest community in the midsize category (pop. 150,000-500,000).” The study examines crime, extreme weather, risk of natural disasters, terrorism threats, air quality, life expectancy and job loss data.

Ever (So) Green
(National Arbor Day Foundation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture)
The City of Lacey has been repeatedly named "Tree City USA” recognizing an ongoing tree planting & maintenance program, Tree Ordinance and annual Arbor Day celebration with tree plantings.

100% Green
(United States Environmental Protection Agency)
The City of Lacey was one of 11 municipalities nationwide to be named a Green Power Community for its commitment to green energy, and reduction of nearly 6,000 tons of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere each year. 100% green power electric is used in all municipal buildings. (August 2007)

Good for Business
(Forbes Magazine, Best Places for Business, March 2008)
Olympia moved up from tenth to eighth in Forbes magazine's list of best places to do business in the nation. Pete Swensson, senior planner for Thurston Regional Planning Council remarked "We have a very stable economy. While other parts of the country have experienced economic downturns in the interim, the Olympia area has avoided a recession since 1982. It's a good place to have a career and a good place to build a business."
