Jubilee’s Service Group brings Christmas to less fortunate children
Holiday spirit arrives early to Jubilee as residents make holidays brighter for overseas children
Listen closely and you just might hear Santa’s sleigh bells ringing at Jubilee on Saturday, Oct. 27, as residents work to make the holidays brighter for less fortunate children.
The Service Group at Jubilee at Hawks Prairie, a master-planned community for active adults age 55 or better, will fill shoe boxes with presents that will be shipped to children around the world. They hope to package and decorate up to 100 boxes, according to Linda Larkin, who is coordinating the event.
“We’re having an enthusiastic response so far to this project,” says Larkin, a Jubilee resident. “We expect about 40 volunteers to turn out, and some folks have invited their grandchildren to come pitch in, too.”
The efforts of Jubilee residents are part of a national project known as Operation Christmas Child. Churches and civic groups around the country will participate in the project, delivering boxes to collection centers where volunteers will coordinate delivery to children in more than 90 countries.
Boxes must arrive at collection centers in mid-November in order to reach their destinations in time for the holidays.
Approximately 125 Jubilee residents donate their time and talents to the community thanks to the efforts of Jubilee’s Service Group. Leaders of the group coordinate two to three planned activities per month for residents seeking volunteer opportunities.
Jubilee’s Operation Christmas Child activities will take place this Saturday between 9 a.m. and noon at the Jubilee Lodge, 8487 Bainbridge Loop NE, Lacey; take Exit 111 from Interstate 5 and follow the signs to Jubilee.
